The capital of Valais and one of Europe's oldest continuously inhabited settlements, Sion is dominated by two dramatic castle hills — Valère with its 11th-century basilica housing the world's oldest playable organ, and Tourbillon with its ruined medieval fortress. The surrounding Rhône valley produces some of Switzerland's finest wines, particularly Fendant and Dôle.
